Kumasi


 








Kumasi is the capital of Ashanti Region of Ghana. With a population of over 1.5 million people, Kumasi is the second-largest city in Ghana. The population largely consists of the Ashanti people, and the while the population of Kumasi is predominantly Christian, a large section of population also follow the Islamic faith.

The city is largely affiliated with gold courtesy of the vast gold deposits that are located in the region. Today, the largest gold mine in Ghana can be found at Obuasi (located 50km south-west of Kumasi). Cocoa & timber are also extracted from the surrounding areas and exported from the city.

On account of this, Kumasi is regarded as one as the most wealthy cities in Ghana, and the city is a hub of culture & entertainment.

An old fort is located in the centre of Kumasi, which has become a tourist attraction. Aside from the history of the old fort itself, it is also the home of the Armed Forces Museum, and features relics from Ghana's military past, including the actions of the Gold Coast Regiments which participated in World War II.

The local football stadium, Baba Yara Stadium, located in the town centre, has a capacity of 45,000 spectators. It is the home of Asante Kotoko, one of the most widely-followed teams in Ghana, and the most well-known teams in the Ghana One Touch Premier League, along with their bitter rivals, Hearts of Oak SC of Accra.

However, a recently-promoted side to the Ghana One Touch Premier League, Kessben FC, has impressed since it's founding year in 2002. Kessben FC has experienced a meteoric rise to the premier league of Ghanaian football, earning promotion to the Ghana One Touch Premier League for the 2007/08 football season.

Kumasi is also the birthplace of Kofi Annan, the former Secretary-General Of The United Nations, who was born in the Kofandros area of the city on the 8th of April, 1938.
